Perspectives of Psychological Operations (PSYOP) in Contemporary Conflicts
Essays in Winning Hearts and Minds

Ron Schleifer

Ron Schleifer is a senior lecturer at the Ariel University Center in Israel and Head of the Ariel Research Center for Defence and Communications. For the past 25 years he has been researching the psychological warfare perspective of the Arab–Israeli conflict.

This collection of essays provides analysis and commentary on: psychological warfare in the battle against terrorism, PSYOP techniques adopted by different Palestinian groups against Israel and actions that promote the Palestinian cause in the West, Israeli strategies for combating radical Islam, and Jewish perspectives on propaganda in the context of Israel’s international image problems. PSYOP – designed to influence the perceptions and attitudes of individuals, groups and foreign governments – is still considered confidential by many defence organizations, hence the lack of publications that deal with the topic in a scientific, factual approach. Perspectives of PSYOP is a follow-on volume to the author’s Psychological Warfare in the Intifada, adopted in the US Intelligence College as a textbook, and widely reviewed to critical acclaim (under the Reviews button).

Notes
Index

“A thoughtful book concerned with the relationships among the media, the military, and policy makers. Recommended.” Choice

“Provides valuable insights into the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians with lessons for students of strategy and counterinsurgency applicable to current operations in the Middle East.” Defense Intelligence Journal

“Dr. Schleifer concludes that a comprehensive understanding of the efficacy of psychological warfare will be critical for all armies fighting future insurgencies.” Middle East Journal

“His approach sheds light on an area every bit as relevant to the present, though little discussed by more traditional historians and political scientists – the role of information, and to a lesser extent, the media, in determining the outcome of violent conflicts.” Digest of Middle East Studies

“An insightful examination of the role of psychological operations (PSYOP) in contemporary conflicts, especially those that are terrorist-based. PSYOPs are designed to influence the perceptions and attitudes not only of terrorist adversaries, but their supporting constituencies, as well. The author, a prominent Israeli academic, examines other issues, as well, such as the PSYOP techniques adopted by Palestinian terrorist groups against Israel in the form of promoting the Palestinian cause in the West, and Israeli strategies to counter such Palestinian propaganda and radical Islam, within the context of overcoming Israel’s international image problems.” Dr. Joshua Sinai, Journal of Countertorrorism & Homeland Security International
